Directing is not for everyone. Everyone won’t know when to tell certain people to do this and do that. Daniel Joseph is one of those who knows how to get the job done. Known for his work touring with the Theater Offensive’s True Colors: Out Youth Theater program and as one of the tour guides at 5 Wits production of TOMB, Daniel Joseph Gonzalez is constantly working on writing and directing projects. In early 2009, he completed a “moment” workshop with a member of the prestigious Tectonic Theater company.
Holding an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education at Massachusetts Bay Community College and a Bachelors Degree in Human Development from Wheelock College, Daniel chose to start Gonzalez Shodan Productions, a film production company in late 2008 after realizing that film jobs are a dime a dozen. He directed his first feature length film in 2009, “Destination Matters”, with subsequent films in 2010, I’m Holding…, and 2011, Sex and Drugs. Later in 2011, Daniel directed an HIV PSA and short film for the Red Hot + contest, both of which were finalists for the competition.
Destination Matters chronicles the life of three teenagers whose lives are turned upside down upon the arrival of Jason Daniels. Daniels returns from the future as his seventeen year old counterpart in an effort to rewrite history and save
humanity from a future straight out of science fiction. The catch: his memory is wiped in the process.
I’m Holding… is about one year in the lives of Kyle and Samantha as they attempt to stay together while at a ninety four percent women college. With an air of teen drama and with a hint of romantic comedy, audiences are sure to relate to the
two characters as they learn to deal with the consequences of their actions.
Sex and Drugs explores the lives of five people over the course of a single evening while at a drug dealers party.
Currently, Daniel is working on a web series about two people who meet on a dating site after watching all of their friends on Facebook get married and have children. The series will premiere on blip.tv this summer.
Daniel is lives in Wilmington, NC and is currently represented by Legacy Talent Management. www.legacytalentnc.com
What’s the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe your movies?
I guess I would say that they are“thought-provoking” though I’m not sure that would really describe them as each of the films I’ve done are very different than each other. I love to look into different facets of human existence through the eyes of people in their teens and twenties and each of the four films and the PSA feature that part of all our lives, as we’ve all been there before. Destination Matters and I’m Holding… took a look at being in your late teens and early twenties from a romantic (and in the case of Destination Matters, a science fiction) context. Sex and Drugs did that from the world of drug usage in small town America.
