I started out writing in different studio’s, and decided to pursue the artist role to network so that I could place more songs on t.v. Since I couldn’t financially promote the way I intended, I decided to stop doing show’s so that I could build up a fanbase on the internet so that when I do more show’s I can let fan’s know what is going on with my music. I really enjoy working with artist’s in the studio recording and I am going to school for engineering. I am independent and I run all my social networking sites. I have a record label called Yum Yum Records LLC. and I plan to keep doing what I’ve been doing, writing, singing, recording, networking, pic’s shows, interviews, etc.. I’m excited to release my single “Deeper (Get Low)” for download on the internet and see how well it does.
What’s the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe yourself as an artist?
I would say that I have a tone that is familiar but you can’t put your finger on who I am, but once you listen to my lyrics and get to know me as an artist, you will feel the intensity in my lyrics and the strength in my vocals. I’ve been told that I have a soothing and seductive tone.
How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve been singing since I was in elementary, writing since junior high, and I started recording in high school in various studio’s. When I was around 19 I sang an original song in front of about 2,000 people at the State Fair. In the past few years I started recording myself and others, as well as performing in a few venue’s in MN, Wisconsin, and Chicago. So even though I have sang most of my life, I really would only count the past 3-4 years.
What inspires your music?
My environment and all that is around me, emotions, dreams, and expectations for myself. When I go to show’s, I get hyped up to go record. When I sit down to record I usually say a prayer for inspiration to write what people would want to hear or say themselves.
Where are you from?
Minnesota! Land of 10,000 lakes and The M.O.A.! I’ve heard so many nicknames: The Twin Cities, Minneapple, The Sota, Murderapolis, Money Sota, etc. I was raised in Bloomington.
What artists in the industry inspire you the most today?
Extremely talented vocalists’ like Beyonce, Ne-yo, Keyshia Cole, Akon, Lady Gaga, Trey Songz, Colby O’donis, Jeremiah, Mariah Carey, Jason Derulo etc. I really get into Hip Hop storytellers like Drake, Lil’ Wayne, T.I., Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, J. Cole, Kanye West, etc.
Why is that?
I love hit songs off the radio, and when I am drivin’ in my car I tend to harmonize with artists and it makes me a better singer. I get inspired to write better too. I think I sing better than I write. The hip hop artist’s are so crazy with their lyrics the way they twist words and the beats are off the hook which inspires me creatively, when I sit to record.
What makes you different from other artist today?
My sound and image. It’s classic yet hip. I’ve always picked my tracks. I love to sing over the top of hip hop beats. I’ve had so many people tell me, that’s not you on the track. They’d say “your a white girl on the outside but your black on the inside”. That was a compliment to me since I grew up listening to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houton, Michael & Janet Jackson. Now-a-days you can’t always categorize an artist in one genre. People do what they do and it either hits or not. If you love an artist you love most of what they do.
What do you want your future fans to know about you?
That I am basically self taught. I picked up a few things in studio’s and took a few dance, modeling, and singing classes, and in studio’s asked a couple questions but I had to figure out everything on my own when I started recording and I really can’t read notes. I have struggled to maintain and support my family on barely anything and the love of my parents by my side. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Education is really the key. I spent so many years guessing, how to do things and making mistakes yet I am very optimistic and goal oriented and always thankful for all the opportunites that have come to me. I really don’t care about Fame. I just want to support my family and be O.K. and give back more than a meal here or there to my struggling neighbors and friends. I was blessed with talent all around me and visions and I want to make other people’s dreams happen! If you want to know anything about me, know that I am a loving person with ups and downs and I always wanted to be well known for accomplishing the impossible. My nickname “Babygurl” was given to me by a couple different people in studio’s and it grew into a persona for me. I guess you could say I’ve been on a mission for a while. Always wantin’ my local musician friends to become international success stories. Someday I want to own a club and retire on a beach by palm trees!
