Sherman Hemsley Star of The Jeffersons and Amen Dies

Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated entertainer Sherman Hemsley, who portrayed the belligerent George Jefferson has died at the age of 74.

Hemsley regaled legions of television audiences every week with his unforgettable portrayal of the cantankerous George Jefferson and later as Deacon Earnest Fry on NBC’s smash sitcom Amen.

Hemsley first appeared on small screens going head-to-head with Carroll O’Connor’s irascible Archie Bunker on the hit series All in the Family.

Hemsley’s passing was confirmed by El Paso, Texas law enforcement authorities where he resided while not filming in Los Angeles. At press time there was no information on the cause of death.
