I go by the name of DejaVu, I’m a female rapper that resides in Lithonia, Georgia but was born in Syracuse, New York. I’m a senior at MLK High School. I started rapping at the age of 6, now 16, I dropped one mixtape entitled “The Contradiction” in February. With it being my first mixtape it wasn’t much, just basically an introduction to who I am as a female rapper and establishing myself as a recording artist. My 2nd mixtape, “Scattered Clouds” will drop on August 20th (my birthday). It’s scattered…literally, it’s somewhat of an experimental tape. I tried out different types of beats and flows. I’m still trying to find myself as an artist and create my own lane among the thousands of unsigned rappers in existence.
Music has always been a big part of my life, I grew up listening to artists such as Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, and Nas. I don’t really like comparing myself to other artists or being compared to other artists. I don’t want people to refer to me as “the next…” I want to stand out as an individual. I’m very versatile with my music, I can go from something chill to just going off on a beat in seconds. So far, on my mixtapes I’ve used industry beats, but I’m starting to get away from using them since I’ve started working with different producers.
I’m in two music groups, BJF and FCOE. I’ve been with them for a few months. Both are full of talented, ambitious artists who all strive to make it to the top. The BJF group tape drops next month. Hopefully me & my FCOE bro Y.Teezy can work on a collaboration tape. I also work closely with my bestfriend, Jonny Rocketz who I also plan on dropping a collaboration tape with. I try to surround myself with the right people, especially when most artists nowadays are fake and rap about lives they don’t live, but I keep it real. Whenever I write songs, I try to stay true to myself and let it all come from the heart, that’s the easiest way to do it. I don’t try to force all the lyrics out of me, I just let everything flow naturally. I rap about my experiences, dreams, and just normal days in the life of DejaVu.
