19-year-old Melvin Vernell III, who went by the stage name Lil Phat, was executed Thursday in Georgia. According to Atlanta authorities Lil Phat was shot several times on the parking deck near the entrance of Northside Hospital Women’s Center and was pronounced dead later that night.
He had suffered numerous gunshot wounds. A motive for the slaying has yet to be made public and law enforcement officials are hunting for two males who were identified as fleeing the scene.
Lil Phat was a member of Trill, a hip-hop imprint on the move in Baton Rouge, La. The rapper was highlighted on Webbie’s hit single “Independent,” which hit No. 9 on the Hot 100 in 2008.
