One on One With “Jess Ewald”

Location: Omaha. NE
Hobbies: Photography, cycling, walking, and design.

Are there any photographers in the industry who inspire you the most today?
I’m really into Instagram. One thing that Instagram provides for me is being able to see and network with aspiring and established photographers who inspire and push me daily. Everyone I follow is an inspiration.

Why is that?
Instragram allows for constant experimentation and immediate feedback. You are able to really explore and develop your style without spending a lot of money or needing access to contacts at galleries, etc. to get your work seen. I like seeing people really push themselves to produce something better or more exciting than their last photo. The consistent, almost daily, growth is inspiring.

What makes your work different?
I don’t consider my work different, exactly. I think my affinity to different processing styles adds to my images. I’m a big fan of processing and editing photos to really sell the shot. I think the end product, regardless of how to arrive there, is all that’s really important to me. That comes from my background in graphic design, I’m sure. I’m fine with creating and using presets and filters to enhance a photograph. I think what might be different about my work is how I find and see what I shoot. I like to walk or bike around parts of town(s) that most people only see flying by in a car. Details of random buildings and how the sun hits them, etc can be missed-and I like to show that. I will walk by a building, that architecturally attracts me, multiple times in a month until the light and the surroundings inspire me to shoot
