Cover Story shot by Martin Luo @Awemartin
Born in Wuhan, China, Gogo Wang moved to Beijing with her family and spent most of her adolescence reading, listening to Rock n’ Roll and doing art. When she was sixteen years old, she spent a year in Iowa as an exchange student. She then went on to become a literature major at Haverford College. Gogo has published three books in Chinese and is a relatively well-known author among young Chinese readers.
How did you start modeling?
I’d had a fashion blog for a while before I asked a professional to photograph me. After working with one photographer, others came to me via Instagram and asked me to model for them. I never thought that one day I could actually be a model, but it has been really fun creating art with people who are adventurous and creative. So I guess here I am!
Did you always know you would get into modeling?
No, not at all. Until about six months ago I had never considered entering modeling. I started writing at an early age and my dream has always been to be a writer.
You look super comfortable in front of the camera.. do you have any advice for an up and coming model?
Just relax and picture yourself in a movie. For me, I usually think of “Before Sunset” or “Conversations with Other Women”. A good photo has to have some space for imagination, and I try to create that imagination by filling myself up with it.
Tell us what are you into besides modeling?
I write, paint and work on my fashion blog with one of my best friends.
Who is your favorite music artist?
Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Breakbot and Mac DeMarco.
Did you grow up with a large family?
Since I was born and raised in China, I’m an only child just like most of other Chinese kids of my generation.
What’s the biggest city you’ve been to?
My hometown, Beijing!
What’s your most favorite city to visit?
Agh, that’s such a tough question—I love Beijing, but I have such strong feelings for Philly (where I went to college), and of course, NYC, where all my friends live now.
What city do you have on your list to go to before you die?
Reykjavik, Iceland. It looks so futuristic and unreal—a perfect substitute for going into Outer Space.
Do you like pets? Do you own any?
When I was an exchange student in Des Moines, Iowa, my host family had a Great Dane and a Boxer. I adored them so much. It is sad that they have both passed away at this point. But yes,
I’m very much a dog person, and I like people with a dog personality. My boyfriend and I often discuss getting a corgi.
What turns you on about a man?
A deep and calm voice; an air of ease; a sense of humor
How can a man get your attention?
Just smile and say nothing. That’s enough.
Any advice on staying focused while you’re building your brand?
What I’ve realized about building your own brand anywhere in the world is that people are going to say things about you, and what you need to do is just smile and keep doing what you are doing.
Tell us how you like your coffee?
Dark with milk. No sugar!
How can we follow you online?
You can follow me @missgogowang (instagram)! or my Chinese blog which I listed on my website (www.missgogowang.com)
