2,000 More Troops Going to Afghanistan

CNN.com

Washington (CNN) — As many as 2,000 additional troops — including a number of U.S. forces — may be headed to Afghanistan in the coming weeks under a plan being proposed by Gen. David Petraeus, CNN has learned.

Petraeus has not commented publicly on the need for more troops, but a U.S. defense official and a senior NATO official directly familiar with his thinking and the entire matter have confirmed details to CNN.

The Petraeus proposal for more troops has been briefed to NATO officials behind closed doors.

According to the NATO source, it calls for an additional 2,000 troops including at least 750 personnel to serve as trainers for Afghan forces. The trainers specifically would work to teach Afghan units how to support their operations in the field. The balance of the forces Read the full story

“Bank Robber Returns Money to Bank, Then Goes to Jail”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Everette Edgeworth thought he was doing a good deed. Or at least, righting a wrong he committed. Setting the scale back to even.

Charlotte police officers didn’t agree.

Minutes after robbing a Fifth Third Bank, Edgeworth turned around and went back to return the money he stole. He was soon arrested.

Apparently, Edgeworth’s belated conscience resulted from fear.

Family members said Edgeworth had no job, no money and nowhere to turn for help. And that might have forced him to rob the bank.

Family members also said he was afraid of returning to prison and that returning the money was his way of atoning for robbing the bank in the first place.

He didn’t want to go back prison, and, in his mind, returning the money would make it all good.” It wasn’t.

Edgeworth may be heading back to prison. He was charged with robbery, and if he’s Read the full story

“7 Spending Tips from Several Billionaires”

by Jean Folger
Sunday, September 5, 2010

Carlos Slim Helu (Carlos Slim), a telecom tycoon and billionaire with well-known frugal tendencies, has a net worth of $60.6 billion, according to Forbes. Assuming no changes in his net worth, he could spend $1,150 a minute for the next 100 years before he ran out of money. To put this in perspective, he could spend in 13 minutes what a minimum-wage earner brings home after an entire year of the daily grind.

Granted, the world’s billionaires (all 1,011 of them) are in the debatably enviable position of having, quite literally, more money than they can possibly spend, yet some are still living well below their means, and save money in surprising places. Even non-billionaires (currently 6,864,605,142 of us) can partake in these seven spending tips from frugal billionaires:

[Click here to check savings products and rates in your area.]

1. Keep Your Home Simple
Billionaires can afford to live in the most exclusive mansions imaginable — and many do, including Bill Gates’ sprawling 66,000 square foot, $147.5 million dollar mansion in Medina, Wash. — yet frugal billionaires like Warren Buffett choose to keep it simple. Buffett still lives in the five-bedroom house in Omaha that he purchased in 1957 for $31,500. Likewise, Carlos Slim has lived in the same house for more than 40 years.

2. Use Self-Powered or Public Transportation
Thrifty billionaires including John Caudwell, David Cheriton and Chuck Feeney prefer to walk, bike or use public transportation when getting around town. Certainly these wealthy individuals could afford to take a helicopter to their lunch meetings, or ride in chauffeur-driven Bentleys, but they Read the full story

“Kanye West Writes Song For Taylor Swfit”

AP, Sep 4, 2010 10:17 pm PDT Hip-hop star Kanye West is still feeling the pain over his ambush of Taylor Swift last year — and he’s expressing his pain all over Twitter.

West unleashed a torrent of emotions on his official Twitter account Saturday, acknowledging once again that he was wrong for jumping on stage, grabbing the microphone from Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards and saying her trophy should have gone to Beyonce.

But the rapper-producer said that he has experienced enormous pain, been the subject of death wishes and suffered tremendous setback to his career.

“How deep is the scar … I bled hard … cancelled tour with the number one pop star in the world … closed the doors of my clothing office,” he tweeted.

The multiplatinum, Grammy-winning superstar had been one of the decade’s most Read the full story

“Floyd Mayweather Apologizes for Racist Comments”

Floyd Mayweather really went in on Manny Pacquiao in a U-Stream rant which had plenty of racial undertones in it.  Well now he has apologized to the public for such colorful language.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to the Internet again on Friday, this time to apologize for a profanity-filled racist rant against Manny Pacquiao that he recorded on uStream.com Thursday.

Mayweather continued to mispronounce Pacquiao’s surname, repeatedly referring to him as “Pooch-ee-ow.” But a day after making racist and homophobic comments on uStream, Mayweather offered an apology to those who were offended.

“I do want to apologize for what happened the other night,” Mayweather said. “I want to apologize to everybody. They felt it was a racist comment that came from me. I don’t have a racist bone in my body, you know. I love everybody. Some of my guys are Muslims. Some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, whites, it doesn’t matter. There is nothing but love in my heart, you know what I’m saying?

“I heard this from a few people. The only thing I want to say is, anybody who was offended by what I said the other day, I apologize as a man. I apologize. Forgive me for saying what I said. Read the full story

“Samsung Makes Its Own Version of Ipad”

It’s very well-known by now that Apple is the standard and every other company in the world that dabbles in technology is doing their darndest to compete with them.  Samsung has entered the race by unveiling their own version of the already hit iPad.  Peep game

Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE: 005930.KS – News) on Thursday unveiled the Galaxy Tab, its take on Apple Inc.’s (NasdaqGS: AAPL – News) iPad, as more technology companies trickle into the nascent tablet market.

Tablets represent a potential new source of revenue for Samsung, which is making up for lost ground in the intensely competitive smartphone business.

Rather than sell it directly to consumers, Samsung will rely on its carrier partners to sell the Galaxy Tab, which runs on Google Inc.’s (NasdaqGS: GOOG – News) Android software, comes with a cellular connection, and features a seven-inch screen. The tablet will debut in Italy, moving to other markets as Samsung locks in more carrier deals.

Vodafone Group PLC (NasdaqGS: VOD – News), the world’s biggest mobile operator, said it would start selling the Galaxy Tab in most of its European markets and a number of its other markets worldwide in October.

It is expected to launch in the U.S. over the next few months, but the company would only say it was in talks with multiple carriers. The Galaxy Tab is essentially an enlarged version Read the full story
