Time Magazine got served its purpose, It got you talking! Get to Know “Chop Suzy”
Evolving from the depths of an overly commercial music scene, Chop Suzy has developed a unique sound of its own that has the power to move young hipsters into a greater appreciation of music and life. Once described as the “illegitimate child of Blue Cheer and the Stooges”, Chop Suzy combine their love of monster guitars and thundering rhythms into a bluesy garage rock that is diverse, powerful, and always leaves their audience wanting more.
Chop Suzy’s first two EPs, released in 2004 and 2006, generated a great deal of buzz for the band as several of their songs zipped to the top of various underground charts throughout the country. Some of the tracks even found their way to the Speed channel and landed in independently produced films. In 2010, Chop Suzy released its first full-length album, Made for Lovers, on its own label. The new album, which pushes Chop Suzy further into a mesh of blues, rock, and good times, has earned much acclaim from their fan base. Chop Suzy has now positioned itself on the verge of breaking through to the masses. The future of rock as we know it is in their hands.
What’s the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe yourself as an artist?
Our self-description really only consists of two words. Pure Awesomeness. We bring together several elements of the musical spectrum to create our own blend of rock that is part garage, part blues, and part mid-nineties revival. What more could you ask for?
How long have you been in the industry?
Individually we have all been around playing music for most of our lives. As a group, we started jamming together and released our first demo about six years ago. Incidentally, some people say that 2004 is the year that rock ‘n’ roll was saved. Although we can’t take all the credit for that, we’re fairly sure that it was 98% Chop Suzy.
Do you have any projects out now?
Our current release is titled Made for Lovers. It’s our first full-length album and is pretty much 45 minutes of non-stop rocking.
What inspires your music?
Everything. Other music, life events, people we know, people we don’t know…you name it. Music is all around us just waiting to be brought to life. Our job as artists is to grab the pieces that we think should be heard and mold them into booty shaking dynamite.
Where are you from?
Two of us (Beau Girardeau and Tony Turbo) ascended into rock stardom from the 5th dimension…aka the Midwest. We both moved to Los Angeles, started jamming, and found our third member (Manual Automatic) fixing cars for beans outside of the local Autozone. We’ve been rocking Los Angeles every since.
What artists in the industry inspire you the most today?
Over the last year or so there have been some amazing rock records released by bands such as Them Crooked Vultures, The Dead Weather, Wolfmother, and Band of Skulls. They have all been a big influence on our latest release.
The biggest influence that these bands have on us is that they are playing good music from the heart. They are rocking their balls off because they really enjoy what they do and are not focused on writing factory produced sounds that are going to score big on mainstream radio. There are a lot of bands who have that mainstream radio sound who inspire us too. Mostly they inspire us not to sound like them.
What makes you different from other artist today?
Most artists take themselves too seriously and focus all of their energy on image and popularity. For us it’s all about the music that we write and having a good time. If you can’t sit back, play some music, drink some beers and enjoy yourself, then you’re really killing the whole spirit of music and you might as well go home.
What do you want your future fans to know about you?
We love music. We love playing music. We love making love to your ears with our music.
