Exclusive Interview with “DJ Brandi Garcia”

A fiercely independent DJ who refuses to be typecast as just a pretty face behind turntables, Brandi Garcia began her career fresh out of high school in her hometown of Tallahassee, FL while attending college at Florida State University. No stranger to hard work, Garcia worked a variety of stations, formats & positions within radio including on- air, sales & promotions. While hosting the weekend mixshows on WBWT 100.7 The Beat, she developed a love of mixing while watching the DJ’s she worked with & even bought her first set of turntables. It became a goal of hers to be the hottest female DJ in the south!

In 2003, Brandi got the midday on-air position at WHRP Power 93.3 in Huntsville, AL and went to work DJing events all over Alabama & Tennessee. Then the big call came to do middays at heritage station KBXX 97.9 The Box in Houston. In the past 5 years, Garcia has come to be the most recognizable DJ in Houston and is one of the top female DJ’s nationally! She has opened up shows for Jay-Z, Ludacris, 50 Cent, Drake & many other top artists as well as having her own successful mixtape series “Southern Stiletto’s”. Brandi also enjoys donating time to charitable/community causes such as “Houston Charity Chicks”, “The Boys & Girls Club”, & Kelly Rowland’s “IHeartMyGirlfriends” organization. Now moving onto the next chapter in her career, Garcia has moved to Los Angeles to expand her DJ brand in the California market! She now does voice-over work, still DJ’s clubs/events and will probably get back in radio.

AT Magazine had a chance to sit down with Brandi Garcia for an exclusive interview.

What’s the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe yourself a a DJ? I describe myself as a “Triple-threat” because I do radio, clubs & mixtapes!

How long have you been in the industry? 14 years in radio & 7 years club DJing

What inspires your music? My love of music! I remember my dad playing records for us in the living room as kids & my sisters & I dancing and enjoying the music. That’s what I strive to do is make people feel good listening to their favorite songs!

Where are you from? Born in Michigan, raised in Tallahassee, FL (home of the FSU Seminoles!), most recently in Houston, and now in LA!

What DJ’s in the industry inspire you the most today? Definately Angie Martinez was always my biggest inspiration! Also DJ AM RIP, The Krackernuttz, and every other DJ that still does it for the right reason – For the luv of the music!

Why is that? I’ve always respected Angie not only because she was the first Latina woman in radio to make it big in Hip-hop radio but also because she did it the right way, she didn’t have to be half-naked or play off the fact that she was a woman. People respected her for her talent & how she carries herself. That’s how I want to be respected as well.

What makes you different from other DJ’s today? I’m not a puppet, I don’t take money for records, i’m not a dj just because it’s cool nowadays and I genuinely still love the music and enjoy what I do. For a lot of DJ’s, it’s just a job.

What do you want your future fans to know about you? That i’m always looking to connect with the fans, whether online, at the parties or on-air. At heart i’m a true fan of radio & used to be the lil kid that called to request my favorite song. Now, I enjoy talking to those that call in to the station or those that come up to the DJ booth in the club that are jammin with you.
